Main Task: Front Cover Texual Analysis

Denotation: This is a magazine front cover of a medium long shot image of woman leaning against a wall, wearing a suit and smiling.

Connotation:
Masthead - Vibe magazine masthead is very distinctive. The masthead font is Sans Serif which means none of the letters are joined together and it looks modern and is bold and is a hip-hop based font. The colours used for the masthead are always different but it always goes with the colour of the coverlines and sometimes the colour of what the person in the front cover may be wearing.. The masthead in this issue is yellow and matches with the coverline covers. I think this colour was chosen because it is the oppistie colour to what the person is wearing so the text is able to stick out more and get the readers attention easier. The word 'Vibe' is a short way of saying vibration. Which is another way of saying relaxing to music making this magazine already seem recognisable as a music magazine.

Coverlines - The main colours used are yellow, black and white but red is also used and the font used is Sans Serif. The main coverline "Janet Off The Wall" is linked to her brother, Michael Jackson, fifth album which is titles "Off The Wall" (released August 10, 1979). The writing 'Off the Wall' looks like it has been painted onto the wall which is close to the effect used on the original album. The word 'Janet' is in red which is different from the main colours used and make it stand out more. The rest of the coverlines are all bold and upper case letters which makes it stand out more. They all follow the colours of yellow white and black and are placed on the sides of the main image except for the cover line at the top which is also red like the main coverline so it could show that the story it is mentioning is as important as the main coverline.

Character - The main image is of R&B singer Janet Jackson.

-Setting - There is not a big setting but from what we can see she is leaning against a wall which links in with the main coverline "Janet Off The Wall" because she is leaning off a wall. It is also the same setting as the album 'Off the Wall' by her brother Michael.
-Lighting - The lighting used seems to be a flash light. It doesn't seem to be natural because there is not a huge shadow on either side of her face. They used high-key lighting because there is not many shadows but the photo looks like the picture might have been during dusk.
-Costume - She is wearing a notched lapel suit which I believe was to make her look like her brother Michael who she is trying to portray. It doesn't make her look to feminine and makes her look quite masculine as what she is trying to achieve. I think her costume links in with the main coverline because the main coverline is about her brother, Michael Jackson and she is dressed as what he would normally wear. In the original album cover Michael was dressed in a suit and leaning of a wall smiling which is the same thing Janet is doing in this pose.
-Prop - Her hat could be used as a prop. It is used to link in with what the article is about because her brother, Michael, is the main focus of the article and she is trying to portray him and he is known for wearing these kinds of hats when he is dancing.
-NVC - The way she is leaning off the wall shows that she is relaxed and casual even though she is wearing a suit. She is smiling which shows that she is happy about this article or her love for her brother Michael.

Selling Line - The selling line is 'First Ever Photo Issue' which is short and already describes what this issue will have in it.

The website link, dateline, barcode and price are all shown on the bottom left side of the front cover.

Target Audience - I think this issue is targeted at Michael and Janet Jackson fans which will probably be 30 - 50 year old people because they were more his generation. However it might be targeted at a younger audience by trying to re-invent/bring back Michael and Janet Jackson. However the magazine is usually targeted at Hip Hop/R&B Lovers. Who will probably be aged 18 to 30.
