Main Task: Double Page Spread Texual Analysis

Denotation: There are two A4 spreads of an article in vibe magazine. Half of the first page is filled with columns and the other half is filled with different pictures of the same person spread out. In the second page less than quarter of the page is taken up by one column while over half the page is taken up by long shots of the subject.

Connotation:
Colour Scheme: This article uses dull gray and black colours but adds little splashes of bright colours mainly blues and reds/pinks. The colour of her outfit matches the colours of the dots placed at the left hand side of the article. This is done intentionally to give a contemporary and modernised look to the magazine. It also matches the highlighted writing in blue.

Character: There is a full body shot of Solange Knowles in colour taking up almost half of one page and seven other photos of her in black and white scattered on the top half of both pages. The article is based on Solange's second studio album, Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams, and is said to be a Neo-Soul/Contemporary R&B genre album.

-Costume: In all photos she is wearing a bright coloured dress which looks like a prom dress. This connotes how young she is or could be a representation of her personality or her music. She could be connoting that her music is fun and modern like what she is wearing.
-Prop: There are no props used in any of the photos.
-Setting: There is no setting but just a white plain background behind the images. I think this was done to make the images stand out more and not be distracted by a setting.
-Lighting: There is high-key lighting used as there are no huge shadows in any of the photos.
-NVC: In the main photo, which is in colour, Solange looks a bit serious. She is not smiling and her pose seems tense. This could connote that what she is talking about is a serious matter to her and she wants readers to pay attention. However in the other black and white photos she seems to be having fun, relaxing and dancing which could connote that is what her music would do to you - It will make you want to dance. So the main image connotes that she takes her music seriously but it is made for the enjoyment of her fans by looking at her other pictures.
-Anchorage: The word "Solange Knowles" in the strap line matches the main image and the headline. Solange in the picture is wearing something bright which stands out, her name in the strap-line is also bright and stands out of the rest of the text and the word "Now" is also written in a bold bright blue font. This allows the reader to tell that the article will not be a dull article and "Solange Knowles" music is what is happening "Now" and that it will be funky like her outfit.

Subject Name: The name "Solange Knowles" is written in the Strap-Line. It is written in bright blue which makes it stand out from the other words which are all written in grey.

Quotes: “It’s no fun to feel like I have to audition for everyone. Or be put out on display for folks to say I strategically put on feather eyelashes just to be different. I just want people to fall back and enjoy the music”. It is bigger than the font of the columns but smaller than the font of the strap-line. It is written in black and is positioned between the main image and the last column, which makes it stand out from the columns.

Stand-first: "Solange is an easy target" is the line that starts off the article. It is in black which is a different colour from the rest of the article. This tells the reader that there is where the article starts from and where they should start reading from.

Headline: The headline in this article is the word "Now" which is written at the top of the page and is bright blue which is the same colour as the subjects name in the strap-line. It is meant to stand out like the subjects name but not stand out as much. That is probably why it is in a smaller and stylized font. The word does not tell the readers anything about the article but it draws them in to read the article.

By-Line: Below the article, on the first page, there is the name of the photographer "Angelo Bootwright" which is smaller than the other font. However I could not find the name of the journalist on any of these two pages.

Columns: The font used is Sans Serif and there are four columns used. The article is mainly in black and white therefore making the words in colour and the main image stand out.

Strap-Line: "Forget her sister. The outspoken Solange Knowles created one of the year's best R&B albums" and is written in grey except for the words "Solange Knowles" which stands out more and lets the reader know who the article is about. The first sentence "Forget her sister." is a reference to her very famous sister Beyonce Knowles, who is more known than she is. She is probably was in the shadow of her sister and is finally allowing herself to try and get on the level of her sister/become as famous as her and this article does not want to be based on her sister. The line "The year's best R&B albums" already tells the reader what the article will be based on.
