The Greatness of Soul

Soul music is said to be a combination of gospel and blues music. To me it is music where I feel you heart should be poured out. Soul music originated from the streets of America (Mainly Louisiana and Illinois). It came from the pain the African American people were facing through discrimination and segregation. They used their pain to write music which then turned to a global sensation and now today is a genre which has been adapted by different artist.

Ray Charles, Little Richard and James Brown played a very big part to soul music expanding globally. James Brown has even been referred as 'The Godfather Of Soul'. They used soul music to influence their style and adapted it with a Rock'n'Roll theme to create the legends they are right now. Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke and Fats Domino are also musicians that helped get the music of soul known and are also today seen as legends. These artist then went on to achieving so much in their life including being in the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and the Rock'n'Roll Hall Of Fame and winning many awards including Grammy Awards, American Music Awards and many different Lifetime Achievement Awards.

Artist such as Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Eddie Floyd, Wilson Pickett and Johnnie Taylor went on to continue the soul music genre in their own style but inspired by the legends who globalised soul music. Soul music then adapted to other new artist such as Stevie Wonder, Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, Teddy Pendergrass, Patti Labelle, Lionel Richie, Smokey Robinsons and Bobby Womack went on to expanding soul music and introducing it in different ways. Motown Records helped to shape the careers of these soul artist and so played quite a important part in the globalisation of soul music.

Soul music then went on to produce a new genre in this new generation which is known as 'Neo-Soul' and also influence many artist such as Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys, Erykah Badu, Musiq Soulchild, Adele, Mary J Blige, Beverly Knight, John Legend, Amy Winehouse and so many more artist. Soul music has not been lost but has been reborn into this new generation and has made its mark in the music industry. It is now a big part of the music industry and a big part of my iTunes play list. I think without soul music a lot of great artist would not 'great' and the world including myself would suffer without it.
